Ved's 10 year anniversary easter egg hunt
Ved is 10 years old today!
The very first version came out on 23 July 2015. It wasn't much yet, because that's also the day I started working on the code for the first time.
Since then, it has become the standard tool to make VVVVVV levels for many people.
Thanks to everyone who has used and supported Ved all these years! <3 Ved means a lot to me and I'm glad that people are finding it useful!
To celebrate, I'm going to shed light on all the secret easter eggs that have been in Ved for a long time! Some people may have discovered one or two, but I think there are surprises here for even the most knowledgeable Ved users.
For the most part I'll show what the easter eggs are, but not exactly how to get them. That's the fun part for you to figure out!
Play Snake on terminals
This is probably my favorite easter egg. You can play a fully functional game of Snake on terminal screens.
How? Experiment for a bit and hopefully you'll find out! :)
Mess around in the help pages
Okay, there's a reason I'm listing this really small one second, and I'll reveal pretty much exactly how to do it: if you use the Konami code in the help pages, or any of the other screens that use the same system and are normally not editable (plugins list, latest version info, and comparing two levels), you now get a few extra buttons that allow you to edit them.
The Konami code also unlocks one of the other easter eggs below.
Potato for Doing Things that are Magical
Pretty early on, I got a loud and clear request to add a potato option.
The resulting implementation is also pretty comprehensible. It's a bit prone to crashing after all those years though. I should fix that.
Falling trinket
If you middle click to scroll, you'd normally get a white or gray ball with arrows in it - in Ved that's represented by a trinket.
Sometimes, that trinket can fall to the bottom of the screen, and break or roll away.
Viridian with trinket eyes
This is actually two easter eggs in one - if you ever find yourself needing to smear out many trinkets like a brush, you can!
If you're doing it right, you might see Viridian with trinket eyes.
And that's all I can think of that's in there right now! There are also two things that used to be hidden, but became real features:
Upside down terminal tool
In VVVVVV 2.2 and earlier, terminals placed with the terminal tool could only be oriented upright. Every April Fools, there would silently be an "upside down terminal" tool. It just placed an upright terminal anyway. This joke became a real thing thanks to VVVVVV 2.3 - I could just keep using the same button icon and make it show up the whole year.
Playtesting
Speaking about an April Fools joke, in 2018 I made a whole reimplementation of VVVVVV into Ved, with some not-entirely-accurate physics...
This was back in the days when there was no way to playtest directly from within Ved - you had to manually load your level in VVVVVV's editor, and arrow-key to the correct room to start playtesting. So this would've been a welcome addition.
This page has the most complete information about the April Fools joke from back then.
When implementing actual playtesting support with VVVVVV, we simply reused the same button that I had made without much thought for my April Fools joke (I added a gold background to make it stand out more...), and it still pretty much looks like that!
And that's all for now! Thanks for reading! Thanks for being part of the level making community, thanks to the people who have contributed code or made plugins, thanks to everyone who has reported bugs or suggested new features, and I really want to add some new easter eggs now.
